2018 Week 43: October Fun

One more week of pleasant weather as we ease into autumn. How long will life thrive in the flower boxes?

We were late celebrating Kayla's ___ (9+8+1+9) birthday.

She asked for a family favorite, a fondue meal. We always enjoy the chaotic family togetherness.

I love watching the young ones play together.

All week, Kayla's dance groups wore their Halloween costume to class (except our older women's tap group!).

Tuesday was Pixel's final journey back to Madjax for its retirement to the robot museum.

Michael was grateful for the good weather to continue cutting wood and preparing the bee hives for winter.

The huge fallen branch is nearly all gone, and the honeycomb frames clean.
We had two delightful young visitors in Art Club this week--members' grands on fall break.

Family members pumpkin-fun appeared throughout the week on Facebook.

Finally, Saturday, we had a brief but wonderful reunion with friends from long ago. Almost every year, Fred and Karen Perry drive through between visits to family in Bloomington and Michigan. Sometimes they are able to stop. So many stories to share, it would take an eternity to tell.

This time Bob Craton (another OMer who lives here) was able to join us as well.

Any exciting encounters in your week?

2016 Week 19: Annual Celebrations

I discovered  this lovely columbine in a hidden place, and almost missed the humble and fragrant lilies of the valley.

Flowers of the week

So many yearly events come together in May--Mother's Day, proms, graduations, bridal showers, end-of-year party, medical and dental checkups, birthdays.

The week began with Mother's Day greetings--phone calls, lovely cards, sweet and moving words-- that help to erase the memories of past failures.

Leah's gift of three more little turtles add to the "Koch turtle family." Can you match them with the grandsons they represent? Below, a five-year-old photo to help you. Wish you could see the fine details on each one.

Malachi and Lexi's prom photo this week may give you another clue.

Tuesday I turned in semester grades and Wednesday evening attended the pinning ceremony for the ASAP students. There I met some of the family members and befriended a six-year-old little brother who invited me to sit with him and because we both have May birthdays, he asked me to come to his party next year!

Friday we had a delightful though brief visit from our friends from way back, reminiscing about our early days together in Vienna, Austria, and even before that in Germany where they were married. Many more long-forgotten memories have surfaced as we read their recently published memoir Stones of Remembrance: Mapping God's Faithfulness through 46 Years--the most recent book in Mike's car for me to read aloud whenever we go somewhere together.

The week's big deadline to work toward was "Mike's Party"--the robotics team end-of-year celebration. Yard and house required a lot of attention having been neglected for a time.

Kayla came for a little visit and seeing that I could use some help, offered to rake out the flower bed which lay protected by leaves for the winter.
Rebecca played contentedly with her toys and clapped for Mamma every time she revved up the leaf blower.

Then I planted the annuals in window boxes and elsewhere in the flower patch.

Saturday morning Kayla texted that she was on her way to help again! It was a rainy cold day so we tackled the inside of the house. She saved the day! Everything was in order by the time the crowd began to arrive. By late evening there must have been some fifty people coming in and out. The young folk playing with nerf guns, swinging around the tree, playing card games or chess. The adults chatting, catching up on one another's lives. Then there was the FOOD, as always super abundant.

My favorite part of the evening was the sharing at the end--a look back over the opportunities and blessings of the year and the open doors for the future!

Believe me, I took many more photos, just don't want to bore you with them.

I knew we'd have plenty of leftovers so why not invite the family over on Sunday with the excuse to celebrate May birthdays. I've heard that it saves time and effort to have piggy-back parties.
Again, I have way too many photos. Here are just a few.

What's everyone looking at?

The young'uns bring us much joy.

Can you guess what our main entertainment was?

2014 Week 38: Many family moments

We are very blessed to have our growing family living in the area. Birthdays are added opportunities for family fellowship.

Diane (9/11), Kristie (9/17)

Diane preferred the traditional birthday song whereas Kristie enjoyed the Krazy Koch version. . . until it would not end!
(How long should each candle represent one year?)

Wanna guess who is the center of attention at family gatherings now? Forget the birthday celebs!

Happy Nanna!

The first time great-uncle Sam got to meet Rebecca. (They have similar hair-dos, don't you think?)

I captured the first pictures of the little family!

"Daddy's favorite girl"                                         "Mommy is the BEST"
For Kristie's birthday Sam planned a romantic two-day getaway and enlisted the grandmothers to help keep the family routines going smoothly.
Kristie left precise instructions for each of us. Here's my list for all day Wednesday and Thursday morning, which included driving back and forth to pre-school and soccer practice twice each.

However, there was time for play. We put together the best track and village ever, according to Zion.

Thursday morning came all too soon. The big boys went off to school at different times.

Surprisingly, the train track was still intact and Zion would have left it that way, but 'hurricane Jude' would not allow it.

Day two: a long walk; bike ride; and Lego fun
So, yes, it was a full week. In addition to all the above family fun, our regular weekly commitments and more.
Michael had many medical-related appointments. The recurring debilitating pain is still there, but he may be closer to a diagnosis and solution.

During his pain-free moments he continued to work on the tree sculpture and admirers keep coming.

This photo arrived yesterday from the Wandering Wheels group that made our place one of the destinations on the last day of their week-long Fall Breakaway.

Saturday was the Fall Harvest Party at Victory Acres, our local CSA (community supported agriculture).

I took a cole slaw dish decorated with spiralized radishes. A little person also thought it attractive.

Today, the first day of Autumn, I began to see signs of leaves changing color.
What changes are you noticing?

2014 Week 31: Storms, Birthdays, Moves, Visitors and More

After one of the storms we found this tree snapped in two and glad that it did not fall across our driveway. Apparently it had been damaged. (Perhaps the huge water tankers when we had the house fire?)

Monday evening we took our young friend Trisha to Stephan's meal for a last time.
She moved to another town this week.

Enjoying Nova the kitten

Birthdays are great opportunities for family get-togethers, in fact three different ones this week!

July 29th we have two family birthdays--my mother's and grandson Skye's.

Mike and I joined brother Alan and niece Tina and their families for Sunday dinner at Grace Village to celebrate Mother's 93rd birthday!
I stuck a candle in her Boston cream pie and we sang to her.
Mike got this shot of her reaction. It has gotten over 50 Likes and numerous Comments on Facebook.

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday, dear Mother. . .

Then on the very day, Tuesday, we were invited to Leah's for Skye's 17th.

Wednesday, before taking a truck load to Trisha's new place, we stopped for lunch at the Lions' Club where they have a weekly meal and a program for seniors. We were glad we did. Our doctors' children provided the delightful musical entertainment.

Thursday, another truck load to Trisha's and then an outing with this handsome man!

Friday, I finished one big cleaning project.

Dear friends from our years overseas stopped by in the afternoon. Fred was the best man at our wedding.

Technology rules our lives now and selfies are fun!

Saturday I helped Karen finish cleaning another level of the old house. I almost took another selfie while halfway inside her fridge. Instead I said goodbye to the Broadway house by taking a picture of a couple of the pretty flowers that abound in the front yard.

The last birthday celebration was here Sunday for Karen's 39th coming up Tuesday, August 5th--
family and friends, tacos, ice cream cake, a piñata out by the picnic area, and loads of fun!

The next BIRTH day coming up soon!

Stay tuned!

2014 Week 29: Convalescing and Celebrating

Mike continues to improve a little each day: taking longer walks; sleeping  better at night and less during the day; adding a couple outings and a few tasks. Wednesday was his first follow-up visit with the surgeon.

But, wouldn't ya know, this is the week the dishwasher decided to quite working.
Jimmy spent a couple hours one evening taking it out and apart.

Thursday was a big day--Kayla's baby shower in the evening!

I spent the day getting the house ready.
In the afternoon the decorators arrived with loads of wild flowers that were arranged in a dozen jars.
I am still enjoying the rearranged bouquets as I eliminate fading blooms each day.

Kristie brought the food including this charming fruit salad.

Then the people began arriving with their gifts and filled our house with love and laughter.

Niece Tina came the furthest with her little Simon, who is wondering who I am.

Kayla was thrilled with all the wonderful gifts.

Among the many, a lovely quilt made by the soon-to-be great aunt Kristie.

Some givers were very creative in how they presented their gifts--a basket made of and filled with goodies for baby care . . .

. . . a bouquet of ballerina-themed baby clothes!

We were privileged to have Tina and Simon stay overnight. By Friday Simon was getting used to me.

Mike was well enough to ride along and enjoy another fun time Saturday, a Circle Tour team reunion--great people, good food, lots of fun!

BTW, I think the girls won the volleyball tourney! ;-)
