A Memorable Mix

Memories surfaced throughout the week. Our Bible Study Home Group hostess brought out a smoked pot Michael had made years ago, a reminder of the many Klaytivity uniquely thrown pieces he's made. In fact that same afternoon I gave away one of the remaining beauties at a bridal shower.

Good friend Gina was visiting from Mississippi! She used to be a regular at Stephan's Monday dinner before she moved far away. So many good memories and a lot of catching up.

That same day, June 10, marked eight years from the day our house burnt down. Gina was among the first friends who came to our rescue.

Our daughter took this photo the days following as we trudged through the muck salvaging whatever we could. It spoke of hope in the midst of chaos and destruction.

We felt truly blessed to watch how God cared for us through the recovery and rebuilding process. Exactly a year later we had an open house to share what He had done and dedicate our new house to God.
Son Stephan catered the event and made an amazing and meaningful ice sculpture--a phoenix rising out of the flames!

A mostly forgotten event surfaced as I was reading my parents' 1996 journal: "It will be 2 years in June that he [Dad] had his heart attack." He would have been 73 at the time. Perhaps that is why it was important for me to have a stress test. Thankfully all is well.

It was also in June, a year ago, that Mother lost the use of her voice due to a paralyzed vocal cord.

Thursday at 2:40 AM my phone rang and the screen showed caller Kathryn Hoyt. I could not make out any of what she was trying to tell me, but, of course, I understood that she was distressed. In the morning the night nurse, who had been by her side for a couple hours (ah, that's why she didn't answer my phone calls!), said Mother was hallucinating.
I canceled art club and drove up to see her. She was able to share the scary scenarios either in writing or mouthing. The images and voices were so real to her. By the end of the visit she was calmer and tired and understood that what she was experiencing was not real. She slept well that night. Her lingering fear that she was going "crazy" was dispelled with the lab results which revealed very elevated thyroid levels which can cause paranoia and hallucinations. When Rachel, the nurses' manager, explained this to her, Mother was visibly pleased and relieved! Hopefully the new dosage of thyroid meds will help. There have been no further incidents.

That very day was Writers' Day in Argentina. I read a few notes posted by a successful author I met long ago, "I celebrate the birds in my head. HAPPY WRITERS' DAY!" Another author's note referred to her calling as the profession of a lier.

My fiction-writer friends amaze me with their prolific imaginations. I, however, lacking that gift, am bound to the facts as I reconstruct my early childhood. The letters my parents wrote in 1946 lay open on my desk for weeks, even months, as I pull out nuggets and paragraphs to include in my story. The photo albums are also readily available to illustrate the events I write about.
I wrapped up another chapter this week about all the celebrations and festivities of that first year in Argentina, ending with a simple and lonely Christmas. I awoke that day to find a small tree, a doll Daddy had been saving for me, and a wicker rocking chair. I was very pleased.

We were so happy this week to get our reupholstered sectional back! Quite a contrast! Does it take so much more to make us comfortable in our old age?

I found an old photo with Daddy for my Father's Day profile pic. If we didn't know any better, it sure appears like I am looking at a cell phone!  Michael's response, "Some things never change."

Rebecca had a lovely Father's Day surprise--she got her Daddy back for the weekend! Matt has been on a job in New Jersey for over a month now. His birthday was June 10th. Over the years we've missed celebrating together--once it coincided with our house fire, a few other times we were traveling in the Basque Country. This time he was gone.

Rebecca had just had her face painted at the first farmer's market of the season. We love our town events. The weather was perfect. We joined Kayla and Rebecca at a picnic table and ate fish and chips from Payne's new truck. Yummmm!

Was your week a mix of memories and memorable events?

2017 Week 33: Rearranging

Just like our flower centerpiece is rearranged from week to week, so our lives keep changing.

Rebecca's birthday celebration with abuela was rearranged. We met at our local eatery, The Bridge Cafe, for her favorite grilled cheese kid's meal. And she opened gifts, we read a couple books, and put together a few wooden puzzles. :-) A fun time to make up for forgetting her big birthday party when we planned our vacation. :-(

That evening at Stephan's, we enjoyed seeing friend Gina again and meeting her grandchilren. Her life and family are experiencing changes.

The focus of the week was to rearrange our things and be ready for our robotics-friend-TU-college-freshman Moriah to move in next week. She came over twice, once with her father to bring some of her things. This is what her room looks like now.

Michael accomplished many things this week. Can you tell what one of his projects was?

Saturday was a big day for our family. Malachi went off to college, to my alma mater!
We volunteered to look after the younger boys while they settled big brother into his dorm room.
We went to a park and had quite an adventure.

Zion Ninja Warrior
Yet another adventure, a visit with great grandma Hoyt. It was hard to remember when they may have seen her last and she needed help recalling their names.

The day ended with a meal outside my old dorm, and the opportunity to meet Malachi's roommate, Jimmy. He's a city boy from Chicago who has six siblings, so wasn't phased at all when the whole family walked into their room.

I remember when we dropped Stephan off at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, I cried on the way home. Life will certainly be different for them now, but very good too. Our hearts are full.

Sunday we had friends over for one last summer fling, two families with four kids each. Everyone tried the zip line. Lots of fun, food, and fellowship.

Yes, summer freedom is over. School and robotics begin again!
I thought I was done teaching, then the phone call. "We need someone to teach Spanish 101 in Muncie, a four-hour class one day a week beginning Monday at 8:00 a.m." I slept on it and decided to say no, unless they'd exhausted all other options. The week went by. Friday, a pleading phone call: "All my possibles have failed." I knew then that I was meant to do this. I'll let you know next week how it's going.

2014 Week 17: Big Announcement

I like this photo from Easter Sunday, I spied Matt and Kayla out on the deck, each quietly doing their own thing. We've found out that Matt is a very good photographer.

They were not so quiet on Monday, however, after they saw many ultrasound photos of their baby!!!

Sharing the news with grandpa                                                              Sharing with the world on Facebook!

The news blew up on Facebook. I posted the photo on the left and it got some 150 Likes!
Now we wait till August to meet our great granddaughter!

Mike is back into the once-a-week Tuesday evening robotics routine. Several times I've looked out the kitchen window in the evenings to see four or five deer grazing on the new grass growth.

Wednesday evening we enjoyed hearing stories from a young friend who's been living in South East Asia.

Thursday evening we attended a concert at Anderson University to support another young friend.

Friday I got to spend hours of fun with my youngest grandsons.

"It's raining"                                                                                "Yeah, the sun is out!"
We spotted some new flowers.

Saturday, while Michael was out on his bicycle attempting to reach 100 miles, his little sister Diane and I spent the day together. First, coffee at McD's, then a long time browsing in the Unorganized Bookstore. She loves bookstores!

I spent a couple hours working in the garden and planted three new starts.
I discovered so many lovely clusters of violets.

Sunday, some friends from Monday night meals spent the afternoon with us so Nanxin could experience Ivanhoe's atmosphere and food, and see our home before she returns to China. We taught her to play Hand & Foot, and she won!

As it seems this weekly post is not complete without an expression of art, here is the piece Nanxin chose from Mike's Klaytivity display.

Another week has flown by and I'm late again.

2013 Week 40: Family and Friends

All my photos this week feature people except one--Mike's sculptures that I delivered yesterday to enter the Grant County Art Association contest and exhibit.

Sarah, Fantasia, Swirl, Rain Drop
I learned as I was filling out the application, that all ceramics come under the category of Sculpture.

Monday
Both Karen and Gina  were surprised to learn they had cut their hair on the same day at the same place.
No surprise at all to see Gina with her first grandbaby again!

Tuesday
Beautiful weather for another cross-country meet. Guess which family member had a mind of his own?

Grandma Debby came straight from her job to cheer Malachi and enjoy the grandbabies.

Wednesday
The ladies Bible study resumed, always a delightful time to meet with friends and talk about Jesus.

Thursday
We had visitors from NC--the Shaneyfelts who work with JAARS. It was fun to catch up with Carol who grew up in Upland. She was a young girl when we moved here. Of course we had to go to Ivanhoe's.

Friday
We'd been looking to replace one of our cars and finally found a good deal in MI. The added blessing was to meet up with Ivan and Kim for lunch on our way back for one last visit before they leave for Argentina in a couple days.

Saturday
We celebrated our favorite granddaughter's birthday. (I can still say that ;-) We had fun as a family with the added presence of the other Kayla, a dear friend, like sisters.

Fun, fun, fun!

We are having more fun than anyone should be allowed!

Sunday, Gina invited all of us like-family friends for lunch.

A small portion of the crowd enjoying the outdoors

Just realized that it's been a year since Kayla got her car and started college. Monday she goes back again.

Friends from Doulos days arrived Monday evening and joined us at Stephan and Karen's for Monday meal. Forgot to get any photos.

Tuesday we took them to the Indiana State Fair along with SIL Diane. Perfect weather and great prices on $2 Tuesday. The highlight for me was the Sandi Patty concert.

Wednesday we took our friends to Muncie to the world headquarters of the Academy of Model Areonautics. Long lines of tents, booths, flags, and model helicopters! And in the Museum we found Mike's name on one of the several walls covered with thousands of names of those who are or have been members. As an adolescent he built and designed remote control airplanes.

Thursday our friends left after breakfast. We had such a good time together.

Friday, Leah joined me at the Upland Farmer's Market to sell some of her unique cards.

And Saturday noon I went to Kristie's baby shower. More fun!

Pregnant sisters and mom-Debby.
Great week, lots of fun, and now it's time to go to bed and be ready for another full week.
